I mean, seriously. It's the epitome of un-cool. But now I want it?
Yeah, I was looking for E46's on CL, and ran across a Smart. It was $5k, and blue. Non-cabrio. That's it really. But I figured it would be unique... Or something.
Is there an aftermarket? What stops me from mounting a 1400cc super bike engine to it and going like hell? Maybe like a big turbo too? Idk.

Although it has the engine and driven wheels in the right place...everything else is wrong. Stick with the E46.

The smart roadster with the brabus engine is my spirit animal
seriously, the Bi-Turbo V6 concept with 215 hp was insane back in the day

I can't find the blue one, it was already old. Here's a yellow one for $5600

Or rather, E46 M3. Anything else, get a Smart.

I've driven a Fortwo cabrio on a number of occasions, and it's a double edged sword. They're super easy to park and drive around town. The cabrio is way more fun because of the open top. The radio works, and it has a go pedal and a stop pedal. They're light, get great mileage, and are gimmicky. It's fun to see people's reaction to them.
The bad part is that they drive like a go kart, and handle like a dumb puppy. That's literally the only way I can describe it. They're not bad cars for around town and commuting/running errands, but they're not easy to work on, and they cannot fit two large pizza boxes side by side. If it's just a get-around car, then it's fine. But for 5k, something is wrong with it that will likely be a big chunk of change to repair (lets not forget it's the smallest mercedes on the market today).
There are things like the Diablo Smart, and similar projects, but in the end, it's smart. the Smart Roadster is a brilliant car, and I would consider if it as long as it's been well kept and is up on maintenance. A Fortwo is a nightmare to purchase used in my opinion. Unless it was a one owner car, and is completely up on maintenance, I wouldn't do it, they're just too hard to work on yourself. Not in the complexity, but the way they're put together makes most jobs take a bit longer than they should (much like some other german cars).

I usually live in Seattle for most of the week and I need to use a Smart by Car2Go. Quite an interesting service and free gas! The crap thing is Smarts require premium, though.
Then again, Hayabusa-swapped Smart cars require 92 premium, fuck that!

I would love one in Hayabusa power plant form. Unfortunately, even if I could justify the cost - which would border on EJ25 Subaru or small block Chevy powered Porsche 914 territory, the newness of the Smart car would require an OBD-II computer to pass local emissions, which nearly all motorcycle engines fail to have despite OBD-II being around for 20 years now.

The only good smart car, is one that makes fun of itself.
